I'm interested that Synergy has moved far past porn with "Vienna Dolorosa" — it certainly is in the company of modern German realists like Günter Grass. Although Mykola Dementiuk appears to be an American of Ukrainian heritage, his style is remarkably German — very depressing to a North American brought up in a much more restrained and "polite" tradition. A millennium or two of invasion, war, rape, betrayal, and repression have produced Kafkas, Brechts, and Grasses. Dementiuk is in that company -- gross, disgusting, powerful, vivid, engrossing.
